1838'de Charles Wheatstone tarafından icat edilmiştir.Daha sonra 19. asırda ve 20. asrın başlarında stereo fotoğraflar çok meşhur oldu.SIRDS ve sihirli göz stereogramları 1959 Bela Julesz tarafından keşfedildi.Dr.Julesz bilgisayarda üretilmiş tesadüfi nokta stereogramlarıyla iki gözle bakıldığında derinlik hissi farkedebilen görüntüler elde etti.Bir görüşmede dr. julesz "Tesadüfi nokta stereogramlarının değişik bir versiyonunu keşfetmeyi hayal ediyorum.Öyle ki kör insanlar bile dokunarak onu görebilecek" demiştir.
